This Year: Be You

You’ve heard it said before that you’re the star of your own movie. But lately, I’ve been thinking about the different roles we play in each other’s movies.

In some people’s story, I’m the hero. I’m the best friend, the inspirational one.

In another person’s story, I’m the villain. I’ve made the wrong choices; I’m not worth the time.

And in another’s, I’ve barely made it to the credit scroll at the end. Most likely credited as “woman on social media” instead of a character name.

No matter what choices we make in life, there will always be someone who agrees and someone who doesn’t. Someone who loves us madly for who we are and someone who just cannot stand us. And you know what? That’s okay!

It’s impossible to please everyone, despite how much effort we put into doing so. Think about it: if you try to please everyone, you’ll strip yourself of your own soul, your own personality, what makes you you. When you try to make everyone happy, you lose your own happiness.

So as we step into 2022, my biggest wish for you is to find so much self-love that you don’t need the acceptance of anyone else. At that moment, you’ll be free to truly be you!
